Senior Planner - Santa Fe, New Mexico

Join our diverse team of planners, architects and landscape architects in the Planning Division. Senior planners are responsible for development and permit review, code updates, comprehensive plan development and implementation and must have excellent written, verbal and public speaking communication skills.

Essential Functions

• Performs advanced professional review of development projects by gathering, analyzing, and presenting data through graphic and written presentation media.

• Manages the review of highly complex development review applications and makes recommendations. Coordinates and provides oversight for review and analysis by other Land Use Department staff; coordinates review by other city departments and outside agencies.

• Prepares written reports and makes presentations to land use boards and elected officials.

• Schedules and conducts meetings with committees, commissions, advisory boards, and elected officials to discuss and make recommendations for review of development applications.

• Meets with developers and other members of the public to explain city regulations and procedures, and to facilitate compliance with those regulations.

• Provides technical assistance to city staff, other governmental agencies, neighborhoods and the general public regarding plans and land development regulations of the city.

• Conducts research on issues, policies and concepts pertaining to planning, zoning, and community development.

• Participates in project review meetings with various departments and developer representatives and identifies problem areas related to city development regulations and policies and negotiates options for compliance.

• Staffs review committees, commissions and/or boards; may serve as primary liaison for the department.

• Conducts neighborhood notification meetings and makes presentations to neighborhood and development industry groups.

• Reviews and evaluates development applications and construction permit applications for consistency with applicable site planning and urban design principles, city development code requirements, the city’s General Plan and other adopted policies.

• Provides specialized building permit review for consistency with applicable city development code requirements.

• Performs field inspections to gather data or verify compliance with applicable regulations relevant to planning processes.

• Prepares drafts of land use regulations and amendments to land use regulations.

• Prepares draft documents including re-zoning and annexation ordinances and annexation agreements for approval by the City Attorney.

• Assists in the enforcement of development regulations.

• Assists in the development of departmental policies and procedures.

• Neighborhood Planning: Coordinate notification of Neighborhood Associations, Condo Associations and HOAS.

Manage and update contact list of all associations. Work with neighborhoods to develop neighborhood plans when

requested. Serve as a liaison between the city and all associations for planning related matters.

• Committee assignments: Participate in various internal committee assignments, including but not limited to: Core40 (Sustainability Plan), MPO TCC, Bike Month Planning, Hiring committees, RFP Evaluation Committees.

• RFP Management: Manage the drafting, publishing, and procurement processes for RFPs for planning related

professional services. Develop scope of work and project phases for long-range planning projects and RFPs.

• Consultant Coordination: Manage day-to-day communication and coordination with consultants while they develop long-range planning project deliverables.

• Public Engagement: Develop and execute public engagement campaigns for various long-range planning projects, including leading and participating in virtual and in-person meetings, surveys, and interviews. Support consultant-led engagement campaigns.

• Housing Pipeline: assist in the updating and management of the Housing Pipeline map.

• IPRA: Respond to IPRA requests in a complete and timely manner.

• Performs other duties as assigned.
