Better Rural Planners,
Better Rural Places
Since 1979, the Western Planner has connected and educated planners across the broad expanses of the West. With our leadership comprised of representatives from each of the 13 states in the West, we focus on supporting rural, county, tribal and small town professional and citizen planners. As a 501c(3) directed by a volunteer board, we depend upon individual and organizational donations to fund our work.
OUR MISSION
Western Planner brings together rural community planners and allies from the expanses of the West to advance and share real-world approaches to our unique challenges.
OUR VISION
Informed, empowered, and connected planners building resilient Western rural and Tribal communities.
WHO WE SERVE
Geographic areas West of the 95th Meridian in US and Canada, specifically the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. This includes various community types, including rural areas; Tribal nations; counties, boroughs and unincorporated areas; small towns, small cities, and villages. Within these areas, we hope to connect with people of various professional roles: professional and citizen planners of all types, planning commissioners, planning advocates, and allied professionals (GIS technicians, architects, landscape architects, flood plain managers, civil engineers, code enforcement officers, building inspectors, surveyors, land use attorneys, community organizers). These people, along with the organizations they represent: planning associations, Tribal governments, NGOs, non-profits, and government agencies supporting rural communities.
WHO WE WORK WITH
The Western Planner has organizational participants designated by the WPR Board of Directors (see below). A participating organization may be any organization that promotes community and regional planning in the West, demonstrates an active interest in WPR programs and publications, and is recognized by the Board of Directors. The purposes of organizational participation are to insure representation of regional ideas among the Board of Directors; to provide for close communication among planners and planning organizations; to obtain appointments to the Board of Directors; and, to solicit ongoing support for activities of WPR.
